10. Challenges for policy and practice

10.7. Family as a socialisation setting and protecting factor

What this is about

Family has a shaping influence. The vast majority of children and young people in Luxembourg describe family as a place where they are protected and encouraged. Many young people experienced this particularly strongly during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, parents serve as role models: from them, children and adolescents learn the rules and behaviour patterns that they often also continue using as adults. For all of these reasons, it is important that families are supported so that they can properly fulfil their role as a formative element for children and young people. They need major social and political recognition. Parents should also be increasingly involved in shaping their children’s social environment, for example at school – because they know what their children need.
